    Azad was charged (in an arrest warrant of 3 April 2012, confirmed by the Tribunal on 4 November 2012) with crimes against humanity, including rape, committed in the course of the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War, for attacking the house of Sudhir Biswas on 8 June 1971, accompanied by armed Razakars, and taking away two women from the house and raping them.

    Azad’s trial was held in absentia as he was believed to have fled Bangladesh. On 21 January 2013, in its first ever judgment, the ICT convicted Azad on all charges.
